« Language is like the living »

Sarah Nuttall, Literary city, in Johannesburg the elusive metropolis, Duke University press, 2008, p. 208.

« For Bakhtin, language is like the living, concrete environment – it is never unitary, it is somebody talking to somebody else, even when that somebody else is one’s own inner addressee. In Andersson’s* conception, which replaces language in it’s city context, urban talks involves making speculations on states of affaires and rendering them intelligible and legitimate for those around us. The city, here, hums with talk, based on shared conversational contexts, in which categories and identities are constantly articulated ».
