Braamfontein is the neighborhood of the Wits University, this area is in deep mutation, art galleries, fashion shop and fancy bars started to take place there.
For this exploration we were three, Hemisha, Murray, two WITS students and François. This process was free of order and interaction with the other groups. After a common walk we decided to split the group and to purshase alone our explorations according to organise a collective presentation on the next day. The question is “how to manage a collective process in which each participant are able to find their specific space of initiatives”. We tried to stage in a collective approch individual island.

concept : The idea was to invite people for a beakfast at Nino’s, famous historical bar from where the Nino’s saga begun.
We ordered 3 tables to organise 3 specific presentations of 3 different points of view. The question of points of view is one of the most central in our approch of public spaces, it’s a fondamental on which we build our scenographic position. As Hannah Arendt wrote in The human condition, the reality of public space is create by the multiplicity of different individual perspectives. See in “Pages arrachées”

Récit de la marche de François
à partir du moment ou nous nous sommes Hemisha, Murray et moi séparés pour continuer chacun de son côté la visite de Braamfontein, mon oeil a été attiré par une série de signes visuels évoquant de façon lus ou moins éloignée des liens avec l’histoire du communisme. La série d’images ci-jointes raconte cette circulation, dérive sémantique surprenante. C’est à partir de ces images conçues comme une série de cartes à jouer que c’est organisée ma présentation au café Nino.
Les cartes étaient posées sur la table face cachée, invitant les auditeurs à les retourner successivement et de façon hasardeuse. Chaque photo ainsi présentée devenait le support d’une narration plus ou moins fictive de mon approche du quartier. Le récit oscillait entre des faits réels, comme la rencontre d’un militant du parti communiste sud africain à la sortie du congrès de l’organisation qui se tenait dans un grand hôtel du quartier à l’interprétation de signes allusifs, vestiges visuels passé dans le champ du commerce et de la communication.
L’image de la statue de Nelson Mandela à Sandton était le joker de ce jeu de cartes, figure énigmatique d’un grand “timonier” en pyjama emprisonné dans un shopping center tel qu’évoqué par Calin Dan dans son texte sur Sandton
