Throughout the world today, artist interventions in urban space are on the rise. The practitioners involved come from the theater and from dance, as well as from the visual and sonic arts. Their context-driven actions produce moments of theatricality that question the very nature of urban space. Formally and in terms of the relations they foster with people who witness them, these actions reconfigure modes of (re)presentation, querying, in an open-ended and unresolved way, the relevance of more conventional art spaces: theatres, museums and the like. Over the course of these two days of encounter, we will explore the reasons why and the ways in which artists working on three continents – in South Africa, in Northern Europe and Brazil – stage their practice(s) in city space and we will consider how, in so doing, they engage (or not) with the stage as a theatrical apparatus, whether by choice or because of historical circumstances beyond their control.

We will enter into an extensive conversation with artists who see the city simultaneously as a space and as a medium – a building block – for creation, practitioners whose work draws its substance from the quotidian theatricality of the city. In their performances, the artists with whom we will be dialoguing seek to tell the city “from the inside”, sometimes discretely, sometimes in great flashes of spectacle. How, we will ask, do speaking the city, wandering through it, improvising with(in) it (alone or in groups) – acts of daily life and creation alike – function in their work? What happens when, in the context of this work, spectators become actors? How, then, does one self-stage? How does one perform the quotidian? At the core of our discussion too will be the role and the effectiveness of art as a tool in bringing about social and political change: can such art as we will be considering here combat? Can it enter the fray of conflict?

By immersing themselves in the city, whom are the artists who draw our attention seeking to engage? Inhabitants, citizens, passers by? What manner of address to the spectator does their work involve? Watching the “stage” in these conditions can fast become a disturbing condition, as the line between fact and fiction blurs, made increasingly tenuous by the theatricality of the city that the artistic act reveals. Is s/he who watches a spectator, an audience member, an individual? Is s/he any or all of these?

Our two-day encounter will be built around the accounts of artists hailing from a wide range of geographical locales. The artists will speak about ways in which, in their urban-based practices, they grapple with the questions outlined above. Theoreticians invited to dialogue with the artists will explore these issues with them. This set-up will allow for an in-depth discussion about the future of public space(s) – a subject that is vital to Strasbourg as to cities worldwide.
