H\u00f4tel classieux avec tourniquet et baie vitr\u00e9e, on avait l\u2019impression de voir le spectre du groom service derri\u00e8re les barreaux qui emp\u00eachaient l\u2019acc\u00e8s au hall de l\u2019h\u00f4tel!<\/p>\n<p>Cet h\u00f4tel \u00e9tait d\u00e9saffect\u00e9 depuis des ann\u00e9es mais nul ne le d\u00e9truisait, nul ne le reconvertissait en un grand magasin. Cet endroit rest\u00e9 inoccup\u00e9, quasiment intact, et surveill\u00e9. comme si le fait qu\u2019il donne son nom au shopping mall en faisant un lieu sacr\u00e9. J\u2019ai demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Bettina si il faisait, au moins des visites, elle m\u2019a dit qu\u2019elle connaissait quelqu\u2019un\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>[Christ Mukenge] <i>Thoughts following a walk through the city with Bettina<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I was born and grew up in Kinshasa. The city there,unlike Johannesburg, has grown old. In the centre of\u00a0Kinshasa there is just one kind of building: a rectangular\u00a0structure, no taller than ten stories, whose rooftop is not\u00a0visible from street level. In such edifices, there are no\u00a0elevators. Soldiers often occupy these spaces, or homeless\u00a0people.<\/p>\n<p>In Kinshasa, no respect is given to historical buildings\u00a0\u2013 to what should be archives conserved for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, moss is allowed to overrun their facades\u00a0and the result in humidity that causes illnesses. The\u00a0result is uninhabitable spaces, which people flee. We\u00a0should have conserved our buildings as has been done\u00a0in Johannesburg. Or perhaps we should have built new\u00a0structures, designed so as to take into account our past\u00a0errors.\u00a0In Kinshasa, construction is anarchy. There is no direction,\u00a0no urban planning. We dream of South African-style\u00a0modernity. Of technology. We dream of the future and, in\u00a0the process, forget our architectural past.\u00a0Before we forge ahead, we should look back \u2013 back to\u00a0that which gave the city a certain beauty in the years\u00a0immediately preceding independence.\u00a0Johannesburg is firmly anchored in the 21st century. Despite\u00a0the fact that they are not recent, the buildings look\u00a0so contemporary to me\u2026 That\u2019s because I\u2019ve never seen\u00a0anything like this. The structures are clean and well kept:\u00a0a far cry from what I know in Kinshasa.\u00a0This statue really caught my attention. In my country, you\u00a0would never see a statue of a naked man on view in the\u00a0street.\u00a0Nudity, where I come from, is never foregrounded in this\u00a0manner. To show a famous person in a state of undress is\u00a0to dishonour that person: it bodes ill. From generation to\u00a0generation, this view is passed on.\u00a0In my Bantu world, this is unheard of. And yet, such a\u00a0statue brings me to think about nudity in a different way \u2013\u00a0that is, from an artistic and a contextual point of view.\u00a0I think: why not? After all, our ancestors did not go\u00a0clothed. Perhaps such figures would help give a better\u00a0sense to our children of what Congo and Africa were like\u00a0long ago.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if something like this could be reproduced in\u00a0Kinshasa. Would it pose ethical difficulties? Might it open\u00a0up onto a lesson about culture, about nudity in the lives of\u00a0our ancestors, of the people of Eastern Kasai, the region\u00a0from which I originally hail? Might it open onto a novel\u00a0understanding of space?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/p>\n<p><em>Marie \u2013 r\u00e9cit et photos<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lorsque je regarde \u00e0 nouveau les photos prises lors de la marche avec Bettina<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.le-hub.hear.fr\/expoplayurban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/DSCN5474.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DSCN5474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.le-hub.hear.fr\/expoplayurban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/DSCN5474-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>je revois le \u00a0d\u00e9calage que repr\u00e9sentait cette \u201cvisite architecturale du centre historique de Johannesburg\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cette visite reprenait exactement le sch\u00e9ma classique auquel j\u2019ai pu \u00eatre habitu\u00e9e pour visiter une ville, pour visiter une ville europ\u00e9enne plus exactement.
