A method, a set of social interactions. Apparently derived from Chinese dream interpretations, Fafi seems to have little relation to anything outside South Africa. at least in its specificity of operation.<br \/>\nIn fact Fafi is an illegal, non-state-controlled form of gambling. played in parks, public spaces, bars or shabeens, Fafi relies on a central and mythological figure: &lsquo;The Chinaman&rsquo;.<\/p>\n<p>Players consult a Fafi agent, telling him or her their dreams. the agent interprets their dreams assigning numbers to the images that come up in the dream. through this process the player is able to isolate a number, on which to bet money. at two times in a day, all the numbers bet on are collected. And returned to the \u00ab\u00a0Chinaman\u00a0\u00bb who then randomly selects the winning number. This winning number is then circulated back to all the sites of betting with winnings numbers being paid out.<\/p>\n<p>The amazing thing about Fafi is the complex system of distribution and connection of an informal economy. Highly organized, yet clandestine and covert. Fafi is an example worth looking at in thinking through how systems can operate outside of the legal mechanisms of the state or private sector.<\/p>\n<p>Detlev Krige has written an article about this system in african studies Volume 70,\u00a0Number 1, April 2011 , pp. 3-24(22)<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;We are Running for a Living&rsquo;: Work, Leisure and Speculative Accumulation in an Underground Numbers Lottery in Johannesburg<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0In this article the author presents a historically-informed ethnography of a Johannesburg underground lottery. The meaning of this lottery is tied up with the local-level sociological organisation of lottery banks and the various actors who participate in it, with changing conceptions of social class, work and leisure under the conditions of growing inequality and jobless growth, and with the everyday strategies and tactics of lottery runners and punters. The author uses the instance of this lottery to argue for a contextualised, multi-levelled and historically-grounded interpretation of the notions &lsquo;occult economies&rsquo; and &lsquo;mysterious modes of accumulation&rsquo; (Comaroff and Comaroff 1999a, 2000). The prominence of speculative accumulation in the context of this lottery and in the livelihood strategies of those living at the margins of the state and society are strikingly similar to financial practices under the conditions of casino capitalism, financialisation and securitisation in financial markets. In this way the author links local practices of speculative accumulation with translocal processes generated by present-day neoliberal policies and financial capitalism.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style jou\u00e9 au Fafi. Le\u00a0<\/i><i>Fafi se joue sur le m\u00eame principe qu\u2019un loto: on mise une certaine somme sur\u00a0<\/i><i>un chiffre qui correspond \u00e0 un \u00abr\u00eave chinois\u00bb.\u00a0<\/i><i>Par exemple, le chiffre 1=king (roi), 3= big water (grande eau), 4= dead man\u00a0<\/i><i>(homme mort), 5= tiger (tigre), 10= eggs (oeufs), 17= white woman (femme\u00a0<\/i><i>blanche), 32= big change (grosse monnaie)\u2026 35= pussy (chatte), 36= cock\u00a0<\/i><i>(bite).<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Au fafi, on mise non seulement sur un chiffre f\u00e9tiche (comme tout\u00a0<\/b><b>jeu d\u2019argent), mais surtout sur une figure.\u00a0<\/b><b>Ce qui m\u2019int\u00e9resse dans ce jeu, c\u2019est justement l\u2019association entre\u00a0<\/b><b>le chiffre et les mots.\u00a0<\/b><b>Or, le r\u00eave est indissociable du chiffre; c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire que le r\u00eave correspondant\u00a0<\/b><b>au chiffre est impos\u00e9 et identique \u00e0 tous les joueurs.\u00a0<\/b><b>Le choix du r\u00eave m\u2019apparue donc totalement d\u00e9risoire puisqu\u2019il\u00a0<\/b><b>est d\u00e9duit du chiffre et inversement. Le joueur a donc le sentiment\u00a0<\/b><b>d\u2019avoir le choix, alors qu\u2019il ne choisit qu\u2019un \u00e9l\u00e9ment sur les deux.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Protocole de jeu (deux fois par jour, \u00e0 13h et 17h):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1\/ on choisit un chiffre (ou un r\u00eave) sur lequel parier.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>2\/ on va \u00e0 la rencontre du ma\u00eetre du jeu (ici pr\u00e9nomm\u00e9 Dj) et\u00a0<\/b><b>on lui confie le chiffre choisi et la monnaie mis\u00e9e.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>3\/ il note notre nom et coche le chiffre nomm\u00e9 dans la grille.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>4\/ attente d\u2019une heure trente avant le r\u00e9sultat.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>5\/ Dj contacte myst\u00e9rieusement le \u00abchinois\u00bb qui r\u00e9v\u00e8le le\u00a0<\/b><b>chiffre \u00e9lu.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>6\/ le vainqueur r\u00e9cup\u00e8re l\u2019argent rapport\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s de Dj.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>En d\u00e9tournant le Fafi, j\u2019ai voulu placer le joueur en interpr\u00e8te de ce\u00a0qu\u2019il voit, des mots et des chiffres qu\u2019on lui pr\u00e9sente, et lui confier\u00a0une part de choix plus grande dans le jeu.\u00a0Pour garder le d\u00e9roulement ordinaire du Fafi, j\u2019ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019ajouter\u00a0une \u00e9tape dans le choix du chiffre, qui consistait \u00e0 associer un objet\u00a0au r\u00eave chinois pour d\u00e9duire enfin un chiffre, parce que l\u2019objet\u00a0porte des facult\u00e9s d\u2019appropriation, de projection et d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation\u00a0fortes.\u00a0Il y avait donc \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent 3 types de choix: un choix d\u2019ordre mat\u00e9riel\u00a0(l\u2019objet), un choix verbal (le mot), et un choix num\u00e9rique\u00a0(le chiffre):\u00a0<i>Mes deux acolytes et moi \u00e9tions munis d\u2019objets cheap en tout genre achet\u00e9s \u00e0\u00a0<\/i><i>Housewives Paradise, que nous avions auparavant expos\u00e9s sur le trottoir aux\u00a0<\/i><i>passants afin qu\u2019ils choisissent leurs objets pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s.\u00a0<\/i><i>Suite \u00e0 cette exp\u00e9rience, nous sommes retourn\u00e9s dans le bar et avons pr\u00e9sent\u00e9\u00a0<\/i><i>la gamme d\u2019objets sur une des deux tables de billard.\u00a0<\/i><i>Puis, nous avons invit\u00e9 le groupe d\u2019\u00e9tudiants \u00e0 venir jouer. Le fafi est une\u00a0<\/i><i>pratique ill\u00e9gale puisqu\u2019elle n\u2019est pas g\u00e9r\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9tat. There is an esthetic dimension, a concept, etc. We could think it\u2019s a performance. But in fact nothing really \u2018happens\u2019. And the instruction given to us before we go, is to just be there,\u00a0have lunch, spend time, and at some point go to see the fafi man, and play the fafi game. But one element of the rule has been changed: an object has been added (all of the objects are visible on a billiards table), but othewhise it\u2019s just the usual game, with a winner at the end. Nobody performs, we order beer, meal, some of us have a rest. We are customers. The unusual of it is we are a big group of customers in a bar\/restaurant where we never have been before, a place for people from around, most of them regular. In a way, we invade the place.<\/p>\n<p>The experience is strong because obviously i\u2019m not a spectator. There is nothing to see, in terms of attention related to the fact of being an audience. But a lot happens, mostly in terms of feelings during the time of my presence. Precisely because I know it\u2019s, in a way, an \u2018artistic event\u2019, and in fact i\u2019m not shure it is. Because it\u2019s a non daily life time, a singular time, but at the same time it is daily life. Because we play, and we have to do something, decide of the moment we do it, which is a bit strange and I don\u2019t know what\u2019s gonna come from that, and this action is not interesting to be observed by people in the place. but still, something happens.<\/p>\n<p>I could say, we \u2018inhabit\u2019 the place as artists (referring in this to a concept by Julie Perrin). For shure, It\u2019s not about being spectator, the experience has nothing to see with a viewer background in a theatrical or spectacular sense, but it\u2019s about addressing to individuals.
